Derrick Pouliot- Portland Winterhawks

For defenceman, what they bring to the table can’t always be measured by the scoreboard. You don’t often see defencemen leading the league in scoring or even in the top 5. However, Derrick Pouliout still managed to have an incredible year on the Winterhawks blue line and an attract some attention.

  • The 17 year-old defenceman had a stellar year finished 3rd amongst all WHL defenceman recording 70 points in just 58 games, a remarkable feat for such a young player. He was a large reason and a leader in helping the Winterhawks win the division. Almost as impressive as his 70 points and 53 assists, is his +40 ranking on the year.

    He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the 2012 draft and has a very bright future ahead of him, a few more years like this in the WHL and the Penguins blue line will open up for him.
