The Calgary Flames signed goaltender Jon Gillies to a three year entry level contract on Wednesday. Gillies was drafted by the Flames in the 3rd round of the 2012 NHL Draft (75th overall).

Gillies just won the NCAA Men’s Hockey Championship with Providence along with fellow Flame Mark Jankowski. Gillies has had tremendous years with the Friars holding a save percentage above .930 in his three years, as well as a goals against average below 2.16.

Jon Gillies was named Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA tournament and it was well deserved. He went 24-13-2 all year and stood on his head when it came down to the final games. He is a big goalie (6’5″ and 216 lbs) and he used it to his advantage. That big body doesn’t slow him down either. He is very quick in the paint and can still make acrobatic saves, like he did in the final seconds of the National Championship against Boston University (below).
