Travis Konecny Named Ottawa 67’s Next Captain
The Ottawa 67’s have a new captain and as you can probably tell from the title, it’s star forward Travis Konecny. Travis will take over for overage forward Brendan Bell, who will instead wear the A this season. The 67’s are hoping their dynamic sophomore will be able to get the team back on the right tracks of winning.
I am both humbled and honoured to have been chosen to wear the C. ~ Travis Konecny
After being named the OHL rookie of the year last season, Konecny is looking for another big season with the 67’s, this time as the captain. During his 70 point rookie season he also took time to lace-up and captain team Canada to gold at the U18 world championship and saw some time with the U17’s. He recorded 9 points between the two tournaments.
This was set to be a big season for Travis Konecny who will be competing with Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin in the upcoming NHL draft. After a very impressive rookie season, the 67’s captain has the potential to be a top 3 pick and challenge the top two ahead of the draft. It will all come down to what he can do on the ice this season with the 67’s and team Canada.
"“Travis has been a captain through his minor hockey years and just about everywhere he’s played. He sets the standard for players in major junior hockey by the way he acts and the way he works at his game.” Head coach Jeff Brown"
Konecny was the first overall pick in the 2013 OHL draft and led the 67’s with 26 goals and 44 assists last season. The 67’s are currently off to an 0-4 start but they are hoping to turn it around with a new captain leading the ship.
Right now Konecny is slated as a mid-first round pick due to the hype around many other draftees, but he certainly has the potential to challenge the top 3 and even climb to the top 5.
With pressure already surrounding the 67’s star forward, a little more pressure with the C and the reigns to club was just placed on him. Will he rise to the challenge and climb up the draft board?
