No matter which way you spin it, losing Jason Spezza is a big dent in your roster and depth chart. Who do the Senators that can replace his leadership, skill and scoring ability? They have some great talent in Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan, but will truly struggle to find offence this season.

Between the pipes with Robin Lehner and Craig Anderson the Senators are solid and we’ve seen goaltending help teams make the postseason, but the netminders will need to play out of their minds all season long for the Senators to get a sniff at the post season right now. Their resigning of Milan Michalek and pick-up of David Legwand who will be stretch to become their next top line centre, don’t show much heading into the 2014-2015 NHL season.

Perhaps this is the perfect time for the Senators to have a bad year when McDavid is up for grabs. Imagine them with a roster boasting Erik Karlsson, Bobby Ryan and Connor McDavid in the future.
