He may not have finished in the top 5 of scoring but the rookie had a stellar season in his first WHL year as a 16 year-old. Nick Merkley jumped into the WHL with the Rockets and didn’t miss a step.
He recorded 58 games in 66 games en route to earning WHL rookie of the year honours. He also recorded four game-winning goals during the 2013-2014 season ranking him first amongst first year players. He was the underdog heading into the season, overshadowed by other, better young players, but at the end of the season he got the last laugh.
He won’t be eligible for the NHL draft until next season and if the kid can build off his impressive rookie year, he may find himself climb up the rankings.
