WHL Playoffs: Hitmen vs. Broncos, Round One

Eighteen points separate the Calgary Hitmen and Swift Current Broncos as the teams prepare to face each other in the first round of the WHL playoffs beginning on March 21.

• Series begins Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 PM MDT in Calgary.

Calgary Hitmen (46-21-1-4, 97 points — 266 GF, 204 GA)

  • Top Scorer: Cody Sylvester, 41G, 49A, 90 points
  • Right winger Brooks Macek was second on the Hitmen in points scoring, with 80 points (32-48) in 70 games.
  • Center Brady Brassart had 78 points (35-43) in 65 games.
  • Defenseman Jaynen Rissling led all Hitmen players with 122 penalty minutes this season.
  • Alex Roach led Calgary blueliners with 49 points (15-34) in 62 games.
  • Calgary went on a six-game winning streak before dropping its final game of the season, a 5-4 loss to Kootenay March 16.

Swift Current Broncos (36-29-3-4, 79 points — 206 GF, 193 GA)

  • Top Scorer: Adam Lowry, 45G, 43A, 88 points
  • Left winger Coda Gordon was second on the team in points scoring, with 59 points in 70 games.
  • Center Graham Black had 24 goals, while Reece Scarlett led Broncos defensemen with 49 points in 67 games.
  • Rookie center Tanner LeSann led the team with 119 penalty minutes.
  • Swift Current ended its regular season stint with a four-game winning streak. The Broncos defeated Moose Jaw, 2-1, on March 8 before defeating Brandon 3-2 the following day. They came out on top of Regina, 3-2, in a shootout on March 15, before defeating the Pats the following day, 6-2.

The Season Series

Calgary won the first game of the season series between the teams, 4-2, on November 18. Swift Current, however, would follow this up by winning the three remaining meetings between the teams. They defeated the Hitmen 4-3 on January 12 and 5-4 on January 30 before taking the final meeting of the season, a 3-1 win on March 1.
