Tonight was the first action in the 2011-12 college hockey season, and with that comes the return of Lighting The Lamp, a recap of select games from across the country. Most of the games were exhibition contests, bu there was one game that counted. Let’s get it rolling:
Lake Superior State 3, Alabama-Huntsville 2: The official opener to the college season was a good one, as Lake State got goals from Chris Ciotti, Kyle Jean and Zach Trotman and 19 saves from Kevin Kapalka to pick up a nice road win in Huntsville.
The following were all exhibitions:
Denver 2, McGill 2: McGill is one of the better programs in Canada, and Denver played both their goalies, but a 2-2 tie must still be a bit disheartening. Jason Zucker had both of the goals for the Pioneers.
St. Francis Xavier 6, BU 4: Definitely the shocker of the night, as BU went down 5-0 before getting 4 back in the third. BU outshot SFX 37 to 25 but were stymied by Joseph Perricone, who had 33 saves.
North Dakota 8, Regina 1: Brock Nelson had 2 goals, and Dillon Simpson had a goal and an assist for the Sioux. Connor Gaarder scored a goal in his first game in a Sioux uniform.
Michigan Tech 5, Lakehead 3: Mel Pearson’s Tech debut went well, as he got 26 saves from Josh Robinson and two goals, including the game winner, from Jacob Johnstone.
