Blashill Leaves Western Michigan For Red Wings

Just under 18 months ago Jeff Blashill was the head coach of the USHL’s Indiana Ice. Now after a stop in Kalamazoo he is returning to the assistant coaching ranks, this time with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.

Blashill spent just one year behind the Western Michigan bench, guiding the Broncos to a 4th place CCHA finish and he took them to the CCHA title game as well as their first NCAA tournament in 15 years. Previously he was the head coach at Indiana (USHL) and an assistant at Miami and Ferris State.

WMU says they will begin the search for a new coach immediately, but the favorite in my mind has to be Miami associate head coach Brent Brekke, who is a Western Michigan alum.
