College Draft Prospect: Jamie Oleksiak
By Fetch
Oleksiak went from intriguing college prospect to slam dunk NHL first rounder. His size (6’7″) has NHL teams drooling, and his exploding stock has prompted a fight between USA Hockey and Hockey Canada to secure his international services. Oleksiak was born in Toronto but grew up in the United States. He was also one of the last cuts from the US’s World Junior team this past season.
Having size is important, but not as important as using it. Oleksiak certainly does that, routinely out muscling opposing players for the puck and being a great space clearer in front of the net. Despite his huge size, Oleksiak is also blessed with good puck skills and can pass reasonably well, though I wouldn’t call it one of his top strengths.
His biggest knock is his skating. Though he is fast in a straight line, he’s not a good turner and is one of the weakest skaters who will go in the first round. I have seen Tyler Myers comparisons thrown out there, but other than the size I don’t see it. Myers is a much better skater and I also think Oleksiak has very limited upside offensively. I’d say more Hal Gill with a better ability to move. There’s nothing wrong with being a solid defenseman, I just wouldn’t expect spectacular.
