Fansided Mock Draft Review: Picks 1-10

facebooktwitterreddit

The NHL writers here at Fansided are doing a mock draft (I am pretty sure just the first round) and since I don’t have a team that I cover but dabble a bit in the prospect side I figured I would grade some selections:

You can go to Too Many Men on the Site for all of the picks:

Current college players selected: None

Future college players selected: None

Best pick: Dougie Hamilton, 8th, Columbus

Hamilton was ranked 4th on the CSS final rankings, and Columbus needs defensemen (though to be fair they need everything). Hamilton had 58 points in the OHL this year, and has grown a lot over the last year, both physically and hockey-wise. He jumps into the play quite a bit, though he is still a very good defender as well. I have read reports that he is a little too aggressive in the offensive zone sometimes, and with him still growing I wonder if he will lose some of his skating ability, but to get him at 8 was a great pick by the Blue Jackets.

Worst pick: No big reaches here. I don’t love Atlanta’s pick of Ryan Murphy because that’s not really what that organization needs, and I don’t think he’ll ever be able to defend in the NHL given that he has problems with it now, but his ceiling makes him a reasonable pick there.
