Leaman Leaving Union

Now former Union coach Nate Leaman is resigning his position and is expected to take the head coaching job at Providence. This year’s Spencer Penrose winner as national coach of the year had a 138-127-35 record in 8 seasons at Union and this past year they won their first ever ECAC Hockey regular season championship.

Though Providence has fallen on hard times recently, its job is still probably more desirable than Union, given that Union does not offer athletic scholarships. Asking a kid to pay around 26,000 a year to go to a very good school and play hockey is a tough ask for a lot of the top recruits out there. It won’t happen right away, but he can get kids with a lot better pedigrees to come to Providence, and I think he will have them in the top half of Hockey East soon.

Union hired associate head coach Rick Bennett, who ironically is an alum of Providence, to replace Leaman.
