Team, Player of the Week

It was a tough week to pick the team of the week, as no one really jumped out at me. BU ascended to the top of the rankings, but did so via a tie. Most of the other teams up high on the rankings either split or won and tied.

But peeking towards the back half of the rankings I came across the winner. Traditionally a doormat in the CCHA, Western Michigan has asserted its ability this year, most recently with a sweep over Michigan State. The Broncos have 6 wins this year, and only two teams have more. They currently have the 9th best winning percentage in the country. While it’s too early to start talking NCAA tournament with the Broncos, it appears they have gotten off on the right foot.

Runner Up: Yale

The player of the week was similarly tough. There were some fantastic goaltending performances over the weekend, but in the end I decided to go with a Freshman forward. Wisconsin’s Mark Zengerle had 6 points in two games over the weekend in Mariucci Arena. Minnesota has fallen off as of late, but that is still a competitive rivalry and goals can be tough to come by. Zengerle’s 6 point weekend vaulted him up the WCHA points rankings. He now sits tied for first in the conference in points per game with Mike Connolly.

Runners up: Pat Nagle, Ferris State; Matt DiGirolamo, New Hampshire; Broc Little, Yale.
