Recently the Hobey Baker Memorial Award foundation announced the Hobey Hat Trick finalists for the 2010 Hobey Baker award. They are:

Bobby Butler, F, New Hampshire

Butler is the nation’s leading goal scorer with 29 goals. He also was tied for 2nd with 53 points. He was 5th nationally in points per game (1.36) and 2nd in goals per game (.74) for the Hockey East regular season champions.

Blake Geoffrion, F, Wisconsin

Geoffrion finished tied for 4th in goals per game, as well as tied for 2nd in total goals (.71 and 27 respectively) for Wisconsin, who earned a trip to the Frozen Four this past weekend. Geoffrion was at his best in conference play, as he led the WCHA with 19 goals in conference games.

Gustav Nyquist, F, Maine

Nyquist led the nation in points (61) and points per game (1.56). Like Geoffrion he did well in conference play as he had 12 goals and 41 points in Hockey East play.

I am really shocked that Wisconsin defenseman Brendan Smith didn’t make the hat trick, but I guess it’s tough to leave off the nation’s leading scorer, leading goal scorer, and a more valuable teammate. The first glance says that Nyquist will win, but the last Hobey winner to not make the NCAA tournament was Denver’s Matt Carle. At first glance I think I’m going to take Geoffrion. He’s the best player on the best team, and he has all the intangibles in addition to the stats.
