Hobey Finalists Announced

It’s that time of year again. The top 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker award have been announced. They are:

Bobby Butler, F, New Hampshire

Marc Cheverie, G, Denver

Blake Geoffrion, F, Wisconsin

Gustav Nyquist, F, Maine

Mark Oliver, F, Northern Michigan

Chase Polacek, F, RPI

Rhett Rakhshani, F, Denver

Cody Reichard, G, Miami

Ben Scrivens, G, Cornell

Brendan Smith, D, Wisconsin

My thoughts: I am surprised that neither Nick Johnson, who is tied for the national lead in goals with 27, nor Cory Conacher who is second nationally in points per game (1.56 per) and is doing it with Diabetes to boot.

Not surprised they took three goalies, and they happen to be the top 3 in save percentage. Also is the nations leading goal scorer, UNH’s Bobby Butler, the country’s leading point getter, Gustav Nyquist, and the top offensive defenseman, Brendan Smith.

I’ll have more analysis in the weeks leading up to the Hobey announcement, but my guy right now if I had to pick is Cheverie. He’s the best goalie in the country and perhaps the most valuable one as well.
