Lighting The Lamp: High School Extra Edition Part Deux

The state high school hockey tournament is always one of my favorite weekends of the year. It’s great to see kids from schools you don’t get to see everyday put everything on the line for their school and town. One thing that takes away from the weekend however is when the refs take the game out of the players’ hands. Such was the case last night in the state tournament game. Grand Forks Red River won their 2nd title in 3 years, but Bismarck outplayed them the entire time. The refs were determined to be the stars of the game though, and called ticky tack penalties all night.

Anyways, enough of me complaining, let’s get to the scores from last night.

Michigan 4, Ferris St. 0: Mark Mitera made his return from injury to score a goal and Billy Sauer had a shutout of the Bulldogs on Senior Night. The win kept Michigan in line for the #2 seed in the CCHA tournament.

Air Force 3, RIT 1: Brent Olson had 2 goals and the Air Force defense held RIT to 17 shots as the two teams shared the 2008-09 Atlantic Hockey championship. Air Force however will be the #1 seed in the Atlantic Hockey tournament via the tiebreaker

Cornell 3, Brown 2: Blake Garbutt scored the first two goals of the game for Brown, but Ben Scrivens shut the Bears down after that and Cornell scored three unanswered, including the OT winner from Blake Gallagher to keep pace in ECAC Hockey.

Minnesota 5, Minnesota-Duluth 3: The Gophers picked up a much needed three point weekend. Although MacGregor Sharp had a natural hat trick, five different Gophers scored to get Minnesota into a tie for 5th in the conference.
