The Florida Panthers drafted Mike Matheson in the first round of the 2012 NHL draft (23rd overall) after an impressive stint with the USHL. Matheson is now playing in the NCAA as a member of the Boston College Eagles. In his sophomore season the defenceman recorded 21 points in 38 games and earning a trip to the Frozen Four.

Matheson might as well be a forward playing defence when he’s out there. He’s got great speed and a knack for scoring goals. His defensive game improved during his sophomore season but still has a little way to go. It would be a stretch for Matheson to join the Panthers next season, however after his junior year it will be very tough to keep the developing defenceman out of the NHL. He’s the complete package of an offencive defenceman, needs to work on physicality and he’ll have no issues. A little stint with team Canada at the World Juniors should also aid his development.
