WHL Playoffs: Winterhawks vs. Silvertips, Round One

The best team in the WHL will begin its playoff run on March 22 as the Portland Winterhawks face off against the Everett Silvertips in round one of the WHL playoffs.

• Series begins Friday, March 22 at 7:00 PM MDT in Portland.

Portland Winterhawks (57-12-1-2, 117 points — 334 GF, 169 GA)

  • Top Scorer: Brendan Leipsic (C), 49G, 71A, 120 points & Nicolas Petan (C), 46G, 74A, 120 points
  • Ty Rattie was second on the team in points scoring with 110 points on the season, including 48 goals and 62 assists.
  • Defenseman Troy Rutkowski led Winterhawks blueliners – and was third on the team in scoring – with 66 points in 72 regular season games this season.
  • Rookie Oliver Bjorkstrand had 31 goals and 32 assists for 63 points in 65 games.
  • Portland ended the season on a six-game winning streak, defeating Everett, Victoria (twice), Seattle (twice) and Spokane en route to the close of the regular season. Their most recent win came in a 6-1 victory over Spokane on March 17.

Everett Silvertips (25-40-3-4, 57 points — 172 GF, 268 GA)

  • Top Scorer: Joshua Winquist (LW), 24G, 27A, 51 points
  • Defenseman Landon Osianski was second on the team in scoring with 48 points (17-31) in 72 games.
  • Reid Petryk and Manraj Hayer had 40 points each this season with Everett, while Kohl Bauml had 36 points.
  • Rookie Tyler Sandhu had 33 points (19-14) in 62 games during his first season in the WHL.
  • Everett ended the season with a 7-5 win over Tri-City on March 17 after dropping a 4-3 decision to Victoria the day before.

The Season Series

The Winterhawks won nine of the ten meetings between the teams this season, including a 5-2 victory to start the season series on October 31 and a 6-3 win on March 5. Everett’s lone win in the season series came on March 2, by a score of 4-2.
