Leafs Sign Scrivens

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed former Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens to an entry level contract. Scrivens will likely compete with fellow recently signed goalie Jussi Rynnas and James Reimer for a spot with the club’s AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

I think this is a good signing for the Leafs. Cornell is of course noted for playing in a defensive system, but ECAC teams scored just over 3 goals per game, and Yale led the country in scoring. Scrivens is also not your typical Cornell goalie either (he’s no Dave McKee for example): He has size, good rebound control, and has great angle awareness. I don’t think he’ll be a Vezina winner but I see him as a solid NHL goaltender, maybe in the Jon Quick mold (not the Jon Quick we saw in the playoffs, however)

And hey, a 1.87 GAA, .934 save percentage and 7 shutouts (14 the last two years) is nothing to sneeze at.
